After the first round of Season 7, Red Bull led Aston Martin by 112 points. Seven rounds later, Aston lead Red Bull by seven.
That 119-point swing has produced the closest fight in the leading half of the BOTT table—and brought together two Team Principals whose routes into the job were very different.
quenooo29 began Season 7 with his first recorded Team Principal appointment. Aardvark's path started earlier: Red Bull's role was vacant at Season 6 Round 11, so he took the reins then and used that opening as the springboard for his first full campaign.
The contest is now almost level. Red Bull's Round 1 advantage fell to three points by Round 6. Aston moved 22 clear at Round 7, before Red Bull's stronger Baku score cut the difference back to seven.
| After round | Aston Martin | Red Bull | Leader | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 55 | 167 | Red Bull | 112 |
| 2 | 170 | 261 | Red Bull | 91 |
| 3 | 283 | 353 | Red Bull | 70 |
| 4 | 357 | 389 | Red Bull | 32 |
| 5 | 423 | 467 | Red Bull | 44 |
| 6 | 541 | 544 | Red Bull | 3 |
| 7 | 615 | 593 | Aston Martin | 22 |
| 8 | 667 | 660 | Aston Martin | 7 |
quenooo29 has led Aston Martin on and off track
quenooo29's influence is visible in both the standings and his own results. His 185 BOTT points are the largest contribution by any Aston Martin driver through Round 8.
That tally accounts for 27.7% of Aston Martin's total. It has also been remarkably consistent: 93 points across the opening four rounds and 92 across the next four. The line-up around him has changed, but his scoring has barely shifted.
| Leading contributor | Starts | Rounds 1–4 | Rounds 5–8 | Total | Share of team score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| quenooo29 — Aston Martin | 10 | 93 | 92 | 185 | 27.7% |
| McBeth655 — Red Bull | 10 | 55 | 110 | 165 | 25.0% |
That consistency helps explain why quenooo29 refuses to treat third as the limit of Aston's season.
“I think Red Bull are a great team that got unlucky and of course mathematically they can contend for third, but with the same reasoning we could contend for first and second.”
Aston sit 140 points behind Ferrari and 486 behind Williams. quenooo29 is not predicting that either gap will disappear; he is rejecting the idea that a seven-point advantage over Red Bull should turn Aston's attention backwards.
“Why am I supposed to believe a 400 point gap is game over and we can’t come back? Just because it’s never been done before?”
For quenooo29, the campaign is about more than where Aston finish.
“There’s no pressure, the only thing I ask the people at Aston is commitment and I think of results as a side effect of our work. Winning is fun and I have experienced it, but if the drivers finish the season as better drivers than they started I value that more.”
For a first-time Team Principal, taking Aston to third after eight rounds represents a strong start. The challenge now is keeping them there.
McBeth655 has carried Red Bull's response
Red Bull's season divides more sharply. The team scored 389 points in the opening four rounds but 271 across the next four. Aston also slowed, from 357 to 310, yet its smaller drop was enough to erase Red Bull's early advantage.
McBeth655 has kept that decline from becoming a separation. His 165 points are the most at Red Bull, with 110 arriving from Rounds 5–8—exactly double his first-four-round return. At Baku, he supplied 38 of Red Bull's 67 points as the team recovered 15 from Aston in a single weekend.
That dependence complicates Aardvark's description of Red Bull's preparation.
“The whole team are doing there best to try out multiple setups and battery guides for the best outcome over the weekend”
The work may be collective, but the recent scoring has not been evenly distributed. Behind McBeth655's 110 second-half points, Zopz contributed 48 and kelloggsrule 37. No other Red Bull driver reached 25 across the same four-round span.
Aardvark nevertheless sees a target beyond recovering third.
“I believe we can secure p2 in the bott if the team trys it's absolute best to get there”
Ferrari hold second on 807 points, 147 ahead of Red Bull. That is a different scale from the seven-point deficit to Aston, but Aardvark's ambition makes the immediate task clear: third is the first position available, not the final one he wants.
Aston and Red Bull face different questions over depth
At the other end of Aston's scoring, Hotshotll_ has collected eight BOTT points from four starts. MagMagnussen remains third among the team's contributors on 85, but his returns have dropped sharply: 61 points in the first four rounds and 24 in the next four.
MagMagnussen's own explanation was direct.
“Haven’t had motivation to give the league any effort this season”
He did not attribute that drop to quenooo29.
“He does support me it’s not his fault that I haven’t been trying”
That distinction puts Aston's emphasis on commitment under a genuine test. quenooo29 has supplied the team's largest score and MagMagnussen has praised his support, but one of the principal's strongest early contributors has scored less than half as many points in the second four rounds as in the first.
Red Bull's shortfall is spread across more of the line-up. Wadz51 scored 32 points across nine starts before resigning ahead of Japan. Among the current drivers, Capybara's 22 points from four starts are the lowest total for anyone with at least four appearances, while Elias_endale, Ceetee19 and Tullo_Formula1 have contributed only 11, 10 and nine points respectively since Round 5.
The distinction is important. Aston's pressure is concentrated around a few underperforming or unsettled seats. Red Bull's is spread across several divisions, making McBeth655's surge both the basis of the recovery and evidence of how much more support it still needs.
Both teams head to Japan with reshaped line-ups
Both principals arrive in Japan after making changes to their driver line-ups.
Aston lost one of its most productive mid-season additions when Frizzstroyer was automatically released after leaving IMS. He had contributed 57 BOTT points, all from Round 6 onwards. MartimSilva was then signed into D2 after scoring two points for Aston at Baku. In D0, Max Weglarz was fired and Abdullah Boulaich signed as his replacement before either could add an Aston score through Round 8.
Red Bull's reshuffle has been narrower but leaves a visible gap. Wadz51 resigned from D1 and gennaro1173 moved up from D2 to replace him. Aardvark briefly registered himself in the newly vacant D2 seat before resigning two days later, leaving Red Bull to begin the Japan build-up with that seat still empty.
Those moves make recruitment almost as important as form in deciding the seven-point fight. quenooo29 must replace Frizzstroyer's recent contribution without upsetting Aston's consistency. Aardvark needs more support for McBeth655 and still has a vacant D2 seat to fill.
| BOTT after Round 8 | Points | Gap to leader |
|---|---|---|
| Williams | 1,153 | — |
| Ferrari | 807 | 346 |
| Aston Martin | 667 | 486 |
| Red Bull | 660 | 493 |
Seven more points would bring Red Bull level with Aston; an eight-point swing would put them ahead on points. Yet Japan will test more than the arithmetic.
quenooo29's first season in charge has turned a 112-point Round 1 deficit into a seven-point advantage while he carries Aston's largest individual score. Aardvark's early Season 6 appointment gave him a head start, but his first full campaign now needs a broader response from the team around McBeth655.
Two very different approaches have left the teams separated by just seven points. Japan will offer the next indication of which one is better equipped for the run-in.
