Webbah87 has raced in IMS since the beginning. His recorded debut came at Season 1 Round 1 in Brazil; 77 starts later, he is still chasing a first World Drivers' Championship.
Japan may not decide that pursuit, but it can change who controls it. Webbah87 leads Walter9500 by only five points in D2, 123-118, with one result enough to reverse their positions.
The contrast with Webbah87's work as a Team Principal is stark. His ongoing Williams tenure began at Season 4 Round 1 and has already delivered two WDCs and three WCCs. After Baku, Williams also led the Season 7 BOTT standings by 346 points—1,153 to Ferrari's 807.
The team picture is commanding. His personal title fight is anything but.
Seven seasons, 77 starts and no WDC
Webbah87's longevity has not produced an easy route to the front. His first IMS victory came only at career start 34, in Season 4 Round 12. His third arrived in Qatar this season, ending another wait that stretched back to Season 5 Round 8.
Through Baku, his record stood at three wins and 12 podiums from 77 starts. The number still missing was one drivers' championship.

That history gives the five-point lead greater weight. This is not simply the next championship opportunity for a serial title winner. It is a live chance for one of IMS's longest-serving drivers to add the prize that has repeatedly eluded him.
Webbah87 is refusing to approach Japan as an exercise in protecting what he has.
“The most important thing is doing my best every weekend. Whether or not that means beating Walter, as long as I’m performing to the level I know I can then that’s all I can do.”
Qualifying first, then 27 clean laps
Webbah87's priorities are specific. Japan, in his view, begins with qualifying and is sustained by avoiding mistakes over the race distance.
“Around here it’s probably getting your quali right and keeping the race generally mistake free. If I can do that for 27 laps that will hopefully set me up well.”
A strong grid position would reduce the work required in the race. A clean 27 laps would give the championship leader the best chance of converting it.

Walter9500's target changes; his standard does not
Walter9500 arrives in one of his strongest spells of the season. Being the chaser gives him an obvious target, but he does not describe Japan as a weekend that demands a different approach.
“Of course being chaser means that you want to chase someone, but i'm always trying to do my best and i'm always trying to do everything to win the race.”
Asked what could shape that pursuit at Suzuka, Walter9500 added:
“On this track different things can happen. We just need to be ready for everything.”
The answers bring the two sides of the title fight closer together. Webbah87 does not want a five-point lead to turn his weekend into an exercise in protection; Walter9500 does not present a five-point deficit as a reason to abandon the standard he takes into every race.
Their positions are different, but their stated instincts are similar. Webbah87 is concentrating on qualifying and 27 mistake-free laps. Walter9500 is concentrating on doing everything he can to win while remaining ready for the range of outcomes he expects the circuit to produce.
For years, his success has been easier to see in the teams he has built. Williams' 346-point BOTT advantage gives its Team Principal considerable comfort on one side of the garage. The D2 standings offer none: Walter9500 needs only a six-point swing to take the lead away.
Webbah87 has been part of IMS since its first round and has helped oversee multiple championship-winning campaigns. Japan is the next test of whether the one title missing from his own record will finally be won—or whether Walter9500's pursuit will make it the prize that continues to elude him.
