Championships are the obvious route to legend. Carlos and EHS took the longer one.
They were both there at the beginning. Carlos made his debut in D1 at the first IMS round; EHS began in D2 on the same weekend. They have returned through seven seasons, 158 starts and every change of fortune that a career without a championship can contain.
They kept coming back. Loyalty to IMS sustained two long careers on the current grid. Loyalty to the competition turned those careers into one of its most intense rivalries.
The ingredients were present in Season 1, even if the two drivers needed three seasons to find each other. D3 finally put them in the same field in Season 4. They have raced together 43 times since.

Two kinds of loyalty, one place on the grid
Carlos's career can be drawn in one colour. All 81 starts, all 456 points and all four podiums have come with Alpine. He stayed as the team around him changed, taking its badge from D1 to D2 and then into the D3 field he shares with EHS today.
There is loyalty in remaining with one team for seven seasons. There is also loyalty in remaining with the league wherever the next seat takes you.
EHS has worn the colours of Ferrari, Haas, Mercedes and Red Bull. He has moved garages, moved divisions and returned to Mercedes for Season 7. The allegiance running through those 77 starts and 501 points has been to IMS itself: another season, another grid, another chance to compete.
One driver became inseparable from his team. The other became inseparable from the league.
Their rivalry is where those two forms of loyalty meet. Carlos is the Alpine constant. EHS is the IMS constant. Every shared grid sets one against the other, long after the championships chose different protagonists.

Their careers did not become a rivalry until Season 4, when D3 finally placed them in the same field. EHS built a six-race advantage across their first two seasons together. Carlos has spent the two since cutting it back, beating him 13–8 over that stretch.

The symmetry arrived early. EHS took his first podium at Imola in Season 2; Carlos followed in Canada one round later. Seven seasons on, both have four podiums, a best finish of second and no victory.
The current D3 table—Carlos on 49 points, EHS on 19—suggests separation. Their longer ledger does not. Forty-three shared races have left them one result apart.
IMS legends before the score is settled
A league needs its champions. It also needs the drivers who return after the title fight has moved elsewhere; the familiar names against whom new arrivals can measure themselves; the people who connect the first season to the seventh simply by continuing to race.
Carlos and EHS have become those people.
Their rivalry carries no public feud and requires none. Its force comes from duration: the same two names, season after season, with neither able to leave the other behind.
Their next shared grid will begin with EHS defending a lead first built in Season 4 and Carlos one result from erasing it. Whether that 44th meeting comes in Abu Dhabi or later, the old contest is waiting.
The score remains open. Their status does not. Carlos and EHS are IMS legends: one defined by loyalty to a team, the other by loyalty across teams, both bound to the league by a rivalry that may never have a final score.
