Ferrari moved to the top of the D2 constructors' standings after Baku with 145 points, four ahead of VCARB. FTR Button supplied the race win from P2.

The drivers' table was tighter still: FTR led HPJones 91-90. One classification therefore left Ferrari first among teams and its race winner first among drivers, with neither advantage larger than four.

A takeover with no room to relax

Four points in the constructors' table and one in the drivers' table made Baku an alignment of leaders, not a separation from the field. VCARB and HPJones remained close enough to answer immediately at Imola.

Williams placed two drivers behind FTR in the race, with Opts Tryhard second and JGelinas11 third. The podium points were distributed widely even though Ferrari gained the leading positions that mattered most.

Two tables point to the same next fight

Ferrari against VCARB and FTR against HPJones became parallel versions of the same D2 contest. Baku put the red side ahead in each, but by margins better suited to tension than triumphalism.

Imola was next. Ferrari carried the lead; VCARB carried the smaller deficit; and one point ensured the driver rivalry would arrive first in any honest preview.
