McLaren left Monza leading the D2 constructors' standings on 47 points, four ahead of Aston Martin. It took the lead on a weekend when Aston's Ranga20063239 won the race.
The contrast was built into the podium. Ranga finished first for Aston Martin, ricardo1803 took second for Williams and Jakebandy8 placed third for McLaren after starting from pole.
Twenty-two points overturn a one-point deficit
McLaren began the round on 25 D2 constructor points and ended on 47, a 22-point addition. Aston Martin rose from 18 to 43 with 25 points, yet McLaren's seven-point starting advantage over Aston was enough to preserve four at the finish.
McLaren entered Monza second in D2 and left it first. Aston Martin made the same one-place climb into second, so the new leading pair arrived together rather than through a runaway by either team.
McLaren also tops the whole Monza round
Across D1 and D2, McLaren scored 47 points from four starts with two podiums and three top-five finishes. Williams followed on 40 and Aston Martin on 32, so the team lead was supported by breadth beyond one divisional table.
Monza separated the obvious headline from the useful one. Aston Martin owned the D2 win; McLaren owned the championship lead. The Mystery Race would decide which achievement travelled better.
