Most recovery records live in one ridiculous race. pwjones has built his across an entire season.
Fifteen Season 7 starts have produced a net gain of 102 positions from grid to classification. Nobody else has reached 80 in a single IMS campaign. SixPath HamM's Season 6 total of 79 is the nearest entry, leaving pW with a 23-position advantage before the Brazil finale.
That gap is not being carried by one freak result. It comes from moving forward almost every time the lights go out.

pw gained places in 14 of those 15 starts. Nine times he improved by seven positions or more. The only reverse came in Qatar D1, where P11 became P13.
Even the split between divisions refuses to reveal a weak side. His nine D0 starts are worth a net 47 places; six D1 appearances add another 55. The average across the season is 6.8 positions gained every time he has raced.
Baku and Japan turned a record into a rout
The two recoveries everybody remembers came together late in the season.
At Baku, pwjones went from 17th to third in D1. At Japan, he started 19th and finished fifth. Two races, 28 places gained.
Those afternoons did not create the record on their own. Remove both and his remaining Season 7 total is still +74, level with the fourth-best complete campaign in the table. The spectacular drives sit on top of the work rather than disguising its absence.
Earlier rounds supplied P22 to P12 in D0, P17 to P4 in D1 and six other gains of at least seven places. There was no need for one enormous rescue because another substantial recovery kept arriving.
The method is deliberately plain: starting position minus classified finish, added across every official start. It does not claim 102 on-track overtakes, and it cannot separate passes from retirements, penalties or cars disappearing from the classification. It records the position pW began with and the one he retained at the end.
By that measure, nobody has changed his own race more often this season.
This was already part of the job description
Season 7 has exaggerated a trait that was already there. pw gained 73 places in Season 6, which remains fifth on the same leaderboard. Add another 22 from seven Season 5 starts and his IMS career total reaches +197.
The rewards in Season 7 have been 116 points and one podium, the Baku third place. This record measures something different from winning. It belongs to the long route through the field: taking a grid position that offers little and repeatedly leaving with more than it promised.
Plenty of drivers have produced a single recovery worthy of a highlight. Jones has done the same basic thing 14 times in 15 attempts, across two divisions, until the accumulation broke clear of everybody else.
After gaining 102 positions, the only thing left to ask is, when is pwjones going to practice qualifying?
