[VA] cloud can settle the D0 championship in Japan. The driver trying to stop it has only just rediscovered the top step.
Cloud leads on 197 points, with piastrigoat second on 102 and [TRT] Karl Verghese third on 99 after eight rounds. Only 96 points will remain across the final three rounds once Japan is complete, so cloud will clinch by leaving the weekend at least 97 clear of every remaining rival.
That opportunity belongs to a driver whose short IMS career has already produced an extraordinary return. Cloud has won 14 of 24 starts—a 58% strike rate—and trails only Darth Ussh on the all-time wins list.

Cloud won the Season 6 D1 championship in a debut campaign that yielded 10 victories. Four more have followed in Season 7: Texas, Las Vegas, Australia and Qatar.
The numbers explain why the title can be closed with three rounds still to run. Cloud's response to that possibility, however, is striking for how little ceremony it contains.

The objective is not the clinching moment itself. It is reaching the end of the season without believing a better result had been left available.
Nor does Japan call for a more conservative approach.

piastrigoat is rebuilding after a brutal Season 6 defeat
piastrigoat's recent recovery gives the contest its complication.
Season 6 ended with Techubi on 320 points and piastrigoat on 168 in E1. The 152-point margin was emphatic, and Techubi had already sealed the championship with three rounds remaining.
The difficult run carried into the middle of Season 7. After opening with second place in Texas, piastrigoat finished eighth in Austria, 11th at Silverstone, fourth in Las Vegas, 10th at Spa and 12th in Australia.
Then the direction changed. Third place in Qatar was followed by victory in Baku—piastrigoat's first IMS win since Season 4 Round 8 and the fifth of a career spanning 77 starts.
piastrigoat believes the pace has returned, even if consistency remains the problem to solve.
“i think I have improved my pace this season compare to previous seasons, however I need to work on my consistency a bit”
Asked what would be required to keep the championship alive in Japan, the Ferrari driver was considerably less optimistic.
“probably a miracle, but i'll try my best”
That answer reflects the arithmetic rather than the direction of piastrigoat's form. A Qatar podium and Baku victory have arrived too late to erase cloud's advantage, but they have restored the possibility of making the leader earn the title on track.
Japan therefore brings together two very different records. Cloud has turned 24 starts into 14 wins and stands one result away from a second consecutive WDC. piastrigoat has finally emerged from the longest winless stretch of his career, only to find the championship itself almost beyond reach.
Cloud can close D0 this weekend. piastrigoat's task is to ensure his revival lasts long enough to delay it.
