cloud provisionally secured a second consecutive World Drivers' Championship by finishing second in Japan, but the race turned on a brutal game intervention for vMv Kart with three laps remaining.
vMv Kart approached a nearly stationary Safety Car, which was waiting for the pack to catch up, too quickly and briefly passed it. He returned the position in time, but the game's illegal-overtake timer failed to clear and disqualified him when it expired. He posted a clip of the sequence afterwards, but the lost result cannot now be restored.
Zopz was left in front and took his first IMS victory, beating cloud by 0.302 seconds. Scott Holmes finished third on his IMS debut after starting 16th, while piastrigoat dropped from pole to fourth.

Second place puts the championship beyond reach
cloud leads piastrigoat by 102 points with only 96 left to win over the final three rounds. Unless the provisional result changes, cloud is the Season 7 D0 champion.

The Mercedes driver won D1 as a rookie in Season 6 and will add the D0 crown once the Japan result is confirmed. Through 25 IMS starts, cloud has 14 wins, 18 podiums and two championships in his first two IMS seasons.
Before the race, cloud had insisted: “My approach this race is the same as every other race”. He started third and finished second, which was comfortably enough to win the championship even as Zopz took the race victory.
vMv Kart's loss becomes Zopz's breakthrough
Zopz took his first IMS win at his 15th start. He had damaged his front wing before his final qualifying run but still qualified second, keeping himself close enough to take the lead when vMv Kart was disqualified.
Only 1.476 seconds covered the top four and the first six crossed the line within 3.328 seconds of Zopz. Scott Holmes charged from 16th to third on his IMS debut, while Magnussen Cube came from 11th to fifth after finding far more wet-weather pace than he expected.
The drying track punished drivers in different ways
The move from wet conditions towards a dry circuit repeatedly changed the feeling through the wheel. Karl Verghese reported that his feedback faded as the track dried and that his wet-biased rear ride height became increasingly unsuitable; he suffered his first crash in two years before recovering to eighth.
Adaś described a similar loss of throttle confidence and cornering feel, turning what he considered a fortunate fifth on the grid into sixth at the finish. pwjones reported leaving his boost engaged through the final corner of the final lap on his way to ninth, while AMS_Tiago said the game had activated boost unexpectedly in the middle of a corner after he was classified as a non-finisher.
Another pole slips away from piastrigoat
piastrigoat had called keeping the championship alive “probably a miracle”. Starting from pole gave him the best possible chance, but Japan was the 12th time in 16 IMS poles that he failed to win.
He has converted only four poles into victories, a rate of 25%. cloud, by contrast, has won all seven IMS races he started from pole.

If piastrigoat intends to engrave his name on the championship trophy again, he must find something within himself to arrest this serial choking on Sundays. Sixteen poles should be the foundation of another title challenge; turning only four into wins is self-sabotage no championship contender can afford.
Fourth place ended piastrigoat's title challenge and left him only one point ahead of Zopz. Karl Verghese remains fourth on 106 points.
No D0 incidents have been submitted so far, and nothing currently threatens cloud's points from Japan. If the result is confirmed as it stands, Zopz has his first IMS win and cloud is a back-to-back champion.
